ADHD Assessments and Prescribing

From 1 February 2026, some GPs in New Zealand with additional training can assess, diagnose, and start medication for adult ADHD.

At Tahunanui Medical Centre, our GPs do not currently provide ADHD assessments, but we support specialist assessments.

We understand seeking an ADHD assessment can feel confusing and stressful. While we don’t provide this service directly, for our enrolled patients, your GP can:

• Talk through your concerns and symptoms
• Help with referrals to psychologists
• Continue prescribing ADHD medication—or start medication if a specialist has provided a diagnosis—where appropriate

ADHD assessments and diagnosis are not government funded and are usually accessed privately.
